The Broadway House Photo Project, 2002-3
Having lived in Broadway House for three years, I realised I knew hardly any of my neighbours. Interested to see how the views I knew so well from my windows would appear from other flats in the building, and curious then to learn who it was who looked out of every window, I invited my neighbours to take three photographs from and inside their homes - one looking north from their kitchen window, another looking south from the living room and a third picture of whatever they wanted inside their apartments - and to give their pictures titles.
Residents from twelve flats took part. With funding from Hackney Community Empowerment Network I was able to hand-print all photographs and to put on an exhibition at Seven Seven gallery, five minutes' walk away. At the opening my neighbours got to meet each other, often for the first time despite several having lived in Broadway House for over 20 years. When the show closed, all photos were returned to the people who took them.
Broadway House is a council-owned and managed block of flats located a stone's throw from the now very popular Broadway Market in Hackney.
